Training and induction
An orientation and training session is held for UK
recruited teachers prior to departure. Written manuals
will also be supplied. As many teachers do not have
experience of teaching English to children, the first
week of a teacher's employment in Japan usually consists
of an induction period based around a 5-day course
aimed at teaching younger learners, but also introducing
teachers to the company's other courses and its administration
systems. Depending on the time of arrival, this training
may be phased into the first few weeks of work.
In addition, there is a series of monitored training
seminars and workshops, assignments, observations
and follow-up meetings throughout the first 3 months
of employment. At the end of this period (or when
the teacher has satisfied Shane of their capabilities
in the teaching of children) the teacher is awarded
the Saxoncourt Certificate in the Teaching of English
to Young Learners (TEYL). However, training and development
- related to adults as well as children - continues
throughout the teacher's employment and regular individual
and group meetings will continue to be held between
the teacher and their Director of Studies.
