experience of the job and the company.
Shane is a British success story, which this year
celebrates its 30th anniversary. It is a well-established
and respected chain of EFL schools started in the
'Kanto' area of Japan by Englishman Shane Lipscombe
in June 1977. There are currently over 200 Shane
schools in Japan, most of which are situated in
the suburbs surrounding Tokyo. At present, over
25,000 students are enrolled in Shane schools in
Japan, with many more studying with Shane teachers
on outside contracts in companies, kindergartens,
high schools etc.
Shane
is very much a British school and in fact is the
largest British English-based school in Japan. Over
95% percent of Shane teachers are British, and as
well as teaching, the company is very keen on exposing
its students to British culture through themes and
topics in the syllabus and though social events.
The company employs over 300 full-time native-speaking
teachers, each of whom is assigned to one particular
district where they are supported by and responsible
to their Director of Studies. Most teachers live
in locations 1 - 1.5 hours from central Tokyo.
