Flights to Japan/ Travel within Japan

The current system is that teachers make their own flight arrangements for travel to Japan within certain guidelines. Note that although teachers pay for their flight themselves, at the end of the teacher's first year Shane offers a contract completion bonus of 60,000 JPY, which helps to offset the flight cost.

It is important to note that teachers will need to ensure they arrive by the dates provided by Shane. This is in order to facilitate meeting and training arrangements. It is also necessary to book the flight well in advance of the arrival date and provide ticket details to Shane so that the visa documents can be issued.

For teachers staying for the long term, Shane's flight arrangements are very generous. After 18 months of employment teachers qualify for a ticket back to the UK when they leave. Those who stay two years or longer get a return ticket to the UK every year.

Tokyo is surrounded by large, sprawling suburbs, all of which are served by a comprehensive transport system. This area is where teachers work. The schools however are spread widely and a large amount of travelling can be expected. Although the aim is to provide as convenient a schedule as possible, teachers can sometimes spend up to 90 minutes each way, sometimes longer, commuting to work by bus or train (though average travel times are much shorter). All travel expenses to schools are reimbursed in full by the company.

Accommodation and welfare

Shane Corporation provides all teachers who request it with basically furnished self-contained rental accommodation within the area in which they are expected to be teaching, and within easy reach of other teachers. Apartments have all necessary bedding, cutlery, kitchenware etc and a telephone. They are not luxurious and by western standards may be considered small, or even miniscule. However, they are the norm in Japan and are perfectly acceptable to most people, and can even be quite cosy.

Shane also offers teachers support and help where possible in coming to terms with the everyday problems faced by foreigners living in Japan. There are Japanese welfare staff for exactly this purpose, and the Directors of Studies and other British staff are friendly and approachable with plenty of experience of living in what can be a very strange and different environment. The company also organises social events for staff, especially new teachers, and generally helps them to settle into their new lives.
